The World Championship Quartz Crystal Dig is this weekend in Mount Ida! The championships, which takes place Oct. 10-11, are a popular event for the town, which is known as the Quartz Crystal Capital of the World. This year, participating mines include Wegner Quartz Crystal Mines, Sweet Surrender Crystal Mine and Twin Creek Crystal Mine.

If you are interested in signing on to dig this year, good news as registration stays open until the morning of October 10. The competition includes two days of digging ( from 8-5 on Friday and from 8-4 on Saturday) at the participating mine of the competitors choosing and diggers get to keep what they find.  Cash prizes are also given out and awards in categories that include Best Cluster and Best Point.

Along with the championships, there will also be the Quartz, Quiltz, and Crafts Festival (October 10-12) taking place at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds all weekend long. This festival includes a gem and mineral show, arts and crafts and over 100 handmade quilts to see. For more details on the events or for a registration form to dig at the championships, check out the Mount Ida Chamber of Commerce site here or the World Championship Quartz Crystal Dig facebook page here.  Happy digging!
